"text": "Back to Perspectives What makes a partner commercially useful?\nWilliam van Wyk · 11 October 2026\nA commercially useful partner strengthens the business's ability to reach customers, progress opportunities or serve the market. The value of the relationship depends on the work it can perform and the conditions under which that work becomes repeatable.\nConnections can open a conversation. Sustained commercial contribution requires relevant access, capability, commitment and a workable division of responsibility. Those elements should be assessed before the relationship carries significant expectations.\nEstablish what the partner adds\nBegin with the commercial gap the relationship is intended to address. Is the business seeking geographic coverage, access to specific accounts, technical engagement, distribution capacity or local service? A clear purpose makes it easier to assess whether a prospective partner is suitable.\nExamine its relevance to the intended customers. Which segments does it serve? How does it engage buyers? What technical and commercial work can it undertake? General visibility in a market does not establish access to the accounts that matter for a particular offering.\nCapacity matters as much as access. A partner may understand the market yet lack the people, systems or financial resources needed to support the expected activity.\nDefine the working relationship\nCommercial expectations need an operating basis. Agree who identifies and qualifies opportunities, manages customer engagement, provides technical support, prepares quotations and handles service requirements. Clarify the approvals and information each party needs from the other.\nThe economics must support the required effort. Consider how margin, payment arrangements, inventory exposure and support costs affect each party's willingness and ability to contribute. A relationship that works only while one side absorbs unrecognised costs is difficult to sustain.\nAssess reliability and conduct alongside capability. Customer relationships create reputational exposure. Qualification should examine references, financial credibility, conflicts and the way the partner represents the business. The depth of that assessment should reflect the responsibilities being entrusted to it.\nTest contribution through defined work\nA useful starting point is a bounded piece of commercial activity: an agreed customer segment, a small set of relevant accounts or a defined service requirement. Establish responsibilities, support and a review point before beginning.\nReview opportunity quality, follow-through, responsiveness and the ability to complete the agreed work. Discuss what is preventing progress, including shortcomings in the business's own support.\nUse that evidence to decide whether to broaden the relationship, adjust its scope or seek another route. Partner development works best when confidence grows through demonstrated contribution and both parties understand what they are committing to deliver.\n\nTurn qualification into a working test\nFor example, ask a prospective partner to qualify an agreed set of relevant accounts and develop one opportunity through the next customer milestone. Agree the technical and commercial support your team will provide. Review the quality of information, follow-through and customer progress before broadening the relationship or considering exclusivity.\nDiscuss an opportunity Back to Perspectives",

"text": "Back to Perspectives When does a market justify more resources?\nWilliam van Wyk · 11 October 2026\nA market justifies more resources when the next commitment has a credible commercial purpose, the business can support it, and the expected value warrants the cost and exposure. That decision may concern a salesperson, technical support, inventory, local service or a permanent operating presence.\nThe right structure depends on what the market requires at its current stage. Early access may be achieved through a partner and central coordination. As customer activity develops, additional capability may become necessary to convert opportunities and deliver reliably.\nSeparate interest from demonstrated demand\nInitial enquiries and a promising pipeline indicate potential. They do not establish repeatable orders or sustainable contribution. Examine opportunity quality, customer commitment, conversion progress, payment behaviour and the demand likely to recur.\nConsider how concentrated the evidence is. One large prospective order can justify specific preparation while leaving the case for permanent overhead uncertain. Several smaller customers with recurring needs may support a different commitment.\nThe decision should reflect the maturity of the evidence rather than the ambition attached to the market.\nIdentify the constraint additional resources would resolve\nMore resources should address a defined limitation. Is the business losing opportunities because technical responses are slow, customer coverage is insufficient, delivery is unreliable or local service is missing? Establish which constraint matters and whether the proposed resource would materially improve it.\nCompare available options. A qualified partner, shared regional support or a limited inventory arrangement may solve the requirement before a full local structure becomes justified. Other markets may require a direct presence because customers, service obligations or operating conditions demand it.\nInclude the wider cost of the decision. Recruitment, management time, systems, working capital and support obligations can extend beyond the initial budget. Assess who will own the activity and whether the organisation can sustain the added responsibilities.\nCommit in stages with a review point\nDefine the next resource decision precisely: what capability is being added, which opportunities or customers it supports, and what commercial improvement is expected. Set a review point and identify the evidence needed to continue, expand or adjust.\nWhere possible, preserve flexibility while uncertainty remains. That can mean a bounded assignment, shared capacity or a phased commitment. "text": "Back to Perspectives Which markets deserve the effort?\nWilliam van Wyk · 11 October 2026\nA market deserves attention when a business has a credible route to customers and a realistic way to serve them profitably. Demand is the starting point. The decision is whether that demand can become worthwhile business within the resources available.\nLarge markets can attract disproportionate effort before those questions are answered. A smaller market may offer better access, a clearer customer need or a more capable partner. Size matters, but it needs to be considered alongside the conditions for competing.\nStart with the customer requirement\nIdentify the customer segments that fit the offering. What are they buying, why are they buying it, and what must a supplier demonstrate to be considered? Product capability, approval requirements, service expectations and procurement practices can materially narrow an apparently attractive market.\nThe useful question is how much relevant demand the business can realistically address. That requires more than a country-level estimate. It requires a view of identifiable customers, competing offers and the reasons a customer might choose yours.\nTest access and economics together\nA route to market must do more than create introductions. It must support qualification, technical engagement, quotation, delivery and service. Assess whether those capabilities exist internally, through partners or through a combination of both.\nThen examine the economics of that route. Pricing, channel margins, logistics, support costs, payment terms and working capital all affect the value available. A market with strong demand can still consume substantial resources for a modest contribution.\nAccount for the time required to win business. Long qualification cycles or uncertain payment can make an opportunity less attractive than its headline value suggests. Effort committed here also reduces what the business can pursue elsewhere.\nMake the next commitment explicit\nEarly market work should produce a decision about what to do next. It may justify focused customer development, partner assessment or a limited commercial test. It may also justify waiting until a specific constraint changes.\nStart with a short assessment of one priority segment: customer need, accessible accounts, competitive position, route to market and expected economics. Identify the assumption that most affects the decision and the least costly credible way to test it.\nCommit the next increment of effort against that evidence. This creates a practical basis for comparing markets and keeps resources directed towards opportunities the business can realistically advance.\n\nA practical decision test\nConsider two potential markets: one has greater demand but requires inventory, local service and a long qualification period; the other is smaller but has an established channel and identifiable customers. Compare expected contribution after delivery, support and working-capital costs. The better first commitment may be the smaller market. State which assumption would reverse that choice.\nDiscuss an opportunity Back to Perspectives",

"text": "Privacy\nHow this website handles enquiries and optional visitor analytics.\nLast updated: 12 October 2026.\nWho is responsible\nThis is William van Wyk’s personal professional website. For privacy questions or requests, email william@williamvanwyk.com with “Privacy” in the subject, or telephone +27 82 878 7193.\nContact enquiries\nThe contact form collects your name, email address, optional company and message so William can respond to your enquiry. Please avoid including sensitive personal information or confidential documents. Your submission is emailed to William; it is not published on the website.\nA necessary session cookie protects the form against forged requests. Temporary security counters limit repeated submissions using a hashed network address. These functions do not depend on permission for optional analytics. Hosting and email providers process information needed to operate the website and deliver correspondence; hosting services may keep security and access logs.\nOptional website analytics\nAnalytics remain off unless you choose Allow. You can choose Decline without losing access to content or the contact form. Use Analytics preferences at any time to change your choice. A recognised Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track browser signal, or the owner exclusion setting, disables these analytics.\nWhen enabled, the existing first-party visitor system records pages viewed, referral origin and campaign labels, approximate location and network, browser and device information, language, time zone, screen dimensions and interaction measures such as engaged time, scroll depth, selected work areas and enquiry status (attempt, validation failure, submission error or server-confirmed acceptance). It uses random browser and session identifiers to connect visits. It does not collect the contents of contact fields, passwords or private dashboard activity.\nApproximate country, region, city and network lookup may send your IP address to IPWHOIS at ipwho.is. Location can be inaccurate, particularly with VPNs or shared networks. The visitor system retains a masked IP address and a keyed hash for security and lookup caching. Hosting providers and the lookup service may receive the full address as part of their network operations. A visit does not reveal a person’s name or employer; automated-versus-human classifications are estimates.\nStorage and retention\nThe browser stores an analytics choice for up to 180 days, an optional analytics visitor identifier for up to 90 days, and a session identifier renewed through meaningful visitor activity, with a new session after 30 minutes without that activity. Background timers do not extend the session. Engagement time is estimated only while the page is visible, focused and recently used. Declining analytics clears the analytics identifiers in this browser; it does not automatically erase earlier server records. The existing visitor system is configured to retain events for 90 days and location-cache entries for up to seven days, with expired data removed during normal system use.\nEnquiries and email correspondence are kept while needed to respond, maintain relevant professional correspondence or meet applicable obligations, and should then be deleted. Hosting-log and email-backup retention depends on the service provider. You may ask about relevant records and request deletion, subject to lawful retention requirements.\nPurposes and legal grounds\nContact information is used to respond to your request, take steps towards a potential professional discussion and maintain relevant correspondence. Necessary security processing protects this website and its communications. Where European data protection law applies, these activities may rely on steps requested before a contract or legitimate interests, as appropriate to the enquiry; optional analytics rely on consent. Where South African law applies, processing must meet the applicable conditions under POPIA. Information is not sold or used for targeted advertising.\nRecipients and international processing\nInformation may be processed by hosting and email service providers and, with analytics permission, the location-lookup provider. Service infrastructure may operate outside your country. Any transfer subject to applicable data protection law must use an appropriate legal basis and safeguards. Contact William for information about the providers, processing locations and safeguards relevant to your enquiry.\nYour choices and rights\nWhere applicable, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of your personal information; object to processing based on legitimate interests; and withdraw consent for future analytics. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of earlier consent-based processing. Depending on your location and whether a law applies to this website, US state privacy laws may also provide rights to know, correct or delete information, opt out of sale, sharing or certain profiling, and appeal a refused request. These rights are subject to the conditions and exceptions of the relevant law. You will not be penalised for exercising an applicable right.\nEmail your request to William. Verification will be proportionate to the information involved; please do not send an identity document unless a suitable verification method has been agreed. An authorised representative may submit a request where the relevant law permits. Applicable requests will be handled within the required legal timeframes. If dissatisfied, you can contact the Information Regulator in South Africa, your competent European supervisory authority or the relevant authority in your jurisdiction.\nSecurity, children and changes\nAccess to the visitor dashboard is restricted. The form uses server-side validation, request tokens and submission limits. No transmission or storage system can guarantee absolute security. This professional website is not directed at children and does not intentionally request their information. The date above will change when this notice is revised.\nAnalytics preferences",
